3 Reasons Car Accidents Are More Likely to Happen in the Summer

While the summertime can be a great time to enjoy the outdoors and vacation with your loved ones, it also happens to be the season when the most traffic accidents tend to occur in the U.S. In fact, August and September are typically the peak months for car accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Although this may be surprising on the surface, the following factors can help shed some light on just why this is.

Here’s Why Traffic Collisions Occur More Often in the Summer

1 – Teens are out of school and on the roads during the summer.

Did you know that you’re more likely to be in an accident in the summer? Here’s why, a Mount Vernon car accident lawyer explains.

In fact, researchers have found that, during the summer, teen drivers generally spend about 44 percent more time during the week driving than during the school year. This means that more inexperienced drivers are on the road for longer periods of time, increasing the risk of collisions (particularly considering that teens are the drivers who are most likely to cause distracted driving accidents).

2 – The summer heat can increase the chances of vehicle equipment failure.

As the temperature outside climbs, it can impact the equipment on a vehicle, especially the tires. In fact, when tires are bit more worn out, hotter weather can cause the air inside of tires to expand, increasing the risk of tire blowouts and, in turn, traffic accidents.

3 – There tends to be more roadway construction in the summer.

In many states, construction crews take advantage of the warmer summer weather to try to get as much done before the winter arrives and put their work on hold. With roadway construction zones (also known as highway work zones), it’s common for there to also be:

  • Shut down traffic lanes
  • Detours
  • Temporary signs or signals
  • Other changes to the typical driving conditions.

This, in turn, can increase the risk of collisions, as more complicated driving conditions can mean there’s more to pay attention to (and a greater possibility of errors occurring). In fact, if drivers may be impaired, distracted and/or fatigued, the risk of accidents will further increase wherever there are highway work zones.
