Four people – two civilians and two Chicago police officers – sustained mild to serious injuries after being involved in a car accident that took place at approximately 9:30pm on Tuesday on South Racine Avenue. According to law enforcement officials, the Chicago police officers had been driving a squad car with activated emergency sirens and lighting when they were t-boned by a passenger vehicle whose driver had been speeding and had failed to yield to the squad car’s emergency signals.
While the officers were taken to a nearby hospital and reportedly have not sustained life-threatening injuries, the driver of the vehicle allegedly at fault for this car accident was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Additionally, the driver of an additional passenger vehicle that had been stopped at a traffic light was taken to the hospital for her minor injuries because the vehicle alleged to be at fault for the accident sideswiped her car after t-boning the police cruiser.
Traffic Offenses and Car Accident Lawsuits
While the woman alleged to be at fault for this injurious car accident has been cited for speeding, failure to yield to an emergency responder and damage to city property, she may also be facing a civil car accident lawsuit filed on behalf of the two officers and other civilian driver who were injured in this car accident. Although it is unlikely that the woman alleged to be at fault in this car accident was intoxicated at the time of the accident (as she would have been arrested and cited for DUI if so), it is more likely that distracted driving or some other form of negligence played a role in causing this crash and the resulting injuries.
