Today kicks off National Safety Month, a 30-day campaign dedicated to preventing workplace injuries, accidents and deaths. Sponsored by the National Safety Council (NSC), National Safety Month is supported by thousands of organizations and businesses throughout the U.S.

This Year’s Theme: What I Live For

For National Safety Month, organizations across the U.S. are focused on preventing workplace accidents, Mount Vernon workers compensation lawyers explain.

For the 2015 Safety Month campaign, the theme is What I Live For, and the NSC is encouraging workers, business leaders and the general public to share their stories to support this campaign.

Some of the specific focuses that the NSC will be promoting during the June 2015 campaign reportedly include (but are not limited to):

  • Workplace ergonomics
  • Use (and abuse) of prescription painkillers in the workplace
  • Workplace transportation safety
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Workplace slip, trip and fall accidents.

While the NSC has various posters, tip sheets and other resources employers can use to promote National Safety Month, it is also offering a free safety webinar, The Hidden Threats to Safety, which is open to the public and scheduled for June 26th.

NSC Shares “Odds of Dying” Infographic for National Safety Month

In its effort to highlight some of the greatest risks American workers (and others) day to day, the NSC has developed a new infographic entitled “Odds of Dying.” Some of the noteworthy facts presented in this infographic include that people have a greater likelihood of being killed by:

  • A prescription painkiller overdose (1 in 234 chances) than an electrocution (1 in 12,200 chances)
  • A motor vehicle accident (1 in 112) than in a plane crash (1 in 8,015)
  • A fall (1 in 144) than in a severe thunderstorm (1 in 6,780)
  • Walking across the street (1 in 704) than a bee/wasp/hornet sting (1 in 55,764).

The point of presenting these facts is to make people more aware and cautious of the everyday dangers they face.
