Tip Top Roofing & Construction Inc., a Sycamore, Ill.-based company, has recently been cited by officials at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for its repeated failure to provide employees with fall protections.

According to OSHA’s report, the citation was issued as a result of a November 2014 investigation into complaints regarding fall hazards at a work site in DeKalb. The citation was for six violations, including:

    Failing to provide fall protections

  • Permitting workers to work near energized power lines
  • Failing to extend a ladder at least 3 feet above the landing (for safe roof access).

Interestingly, this is reportedly the third OSHA citation this roofing company has received since 2008.

Commenting on this case, OSHA’s Area Director in Aurora, Illinois, Jacob Scott, stated:

A roofer can fall to his death in mere seconds. By refusing to provide fall protection to its workers, Tip Top Roofing and Construction is gambling with workers’ lives and livelihood — and that is unacceptable… With everything we know about how to work safely, it’s troubling to see how many workers are still injured every year in the construction trades, and particularly from falls.

A Look at Why Fall Protections Are So Important

According to OSHA, “falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. Employers must set up the work place to prevent employees from falling off of overhead platforms, elevated work stations or into holes in the floor and walls.”

OSHA encourages workers who believe that their employer is not complying with OSHA fall protection standards to file complaints and/or request an inspection of their workplaces.
