Picking up from The Do’s & Don’ts of Dealing with Insurers after Car Accidents (Pt. 1), here are some more important things that drivers should do when they are reporting motor vehicle accidents to their insurers. By following the Do’s and Don’ts in this three-part blog, drivers can effectively facilitate their claims while minimizing the possibility that insurers will deny or undervalue their claims.

Along with reporting the incident as soon as possible to insurers, here are some other things motorists should do when dealing with their insurance companies:

• DO explain all of the facts of the incident – As you report the accident, make sure to specifically state the date on which the accident occurred, the time of day of the accident, and the location where the accident took place. Additionally, be as detailed as you can be when explaining who else was involved in the collision and what occurred after the incident (e.g., whether police arrived, you received medical treatment for your injuries, etc.).
• DO provide your insurer with other motorists’ and/or witnesses’ information – If you were able to get personal/contact information for the other motorists involved in the accident and/or any witnesses to the incident, make sure you provide this info to your insurer. This can be crucial in facilitating your claim (as insurers won’t have to wait for the official police report, which can take weeks to be ready).
• DO refer your insurer to your attorney – If you have a lawyer, have your insurer deal with your attorney directly from the get go. Your attorney will make sure the insurer gets all of the info it needs while still protecting your rights in the process.
