With the New Year, come new resolutions – losing weight, spending less, etc. Although most people don’t consider improving their driving skills and being more diligent about driving safety when it comes to making New Year’s resolution, such resolutions can save lives. For the month of January, we will be focusing our blogs on various road safety topics to encourage all motorists to do their part to be more careful drivers and, in turn, reduce the risk of motor vehicle accidents when they are on the roads.

Here are the two three winter driving safety tips that can help motorists commute safely this winter.

  • Winter Driving Safety Tip 1: Make sure your car is in good working order – Driving your car with bad brakes, a cracked windshield, bald tires or other defects is never a good idea, but it can be absolutely disastrous during the wintertime. The reason is that winter tends to bring about dangerous weather conditions that inherently make it more difficult to operate cars (e.g., icy roads make it harder to slow down and stop cars, snow impacts visibility out of windshields, etc.).Given these facts, drivers should consider having their vehicle inspected and performing any necessary maintenance on their car before winter starts (or as soon as possible if you missed your opportunity to do so in the fall). While you may think that you can’t afford to get your car fixed, you will definitely not want to pay the expensive fees associated with fixing your car after an accident.
  • Winter Driving Safety Tip 2: Slow down! – With icy and snowy road conditions, it’s common for cars to lose traction and, consequently, be more difficult to slow down and stop. What this means for drivers is that it will be increasingly important during the winter to avoid speeding and obey all posted speed limits; however, it’s a better idea to take it down a notch and go about 5 mph slower than the posted speed limits to make it that much easier to stop your car when necessary.
