Tragically, nursing home abuse and neglect is an all-too-common occurrence, as the National Center on Elder Abuse reports that about 10 percent of all nursing home residents will be abused and/or neglected at some point while staying in these facilities. In some cases, other family members may be the perpetrators of the abuse. In other cases, the abusers may be the very professionals and nursing home staff who are being trusted and paid to care for families’ elderly loved ones.

Nursing home abuse warning signs can be subtle, but being aware of them can help families intervene before it’s too late.

Given the prevalence of nursing home abuse, as well as the fact that it can have devastating effects on elderly loved ones, it’s vital that families are aware of some of the most common warning signs of nursing home abuse. Understanding these warning signs can help people intervene early and get help for their elderly loved ones who may not be able to help themselves.

1. Withdrawal from Family and Friends

When nursing home residents who are usually social and up-beat start emotionally withdrawing from their family and friends, it’s possible that some type of abuse is occurring (or has taken place). In other words, significant changes in residents’ personality and social interactions can be an emotional reflection of physical or psychological abuse that has been sustained.

Specifically, families should start being concerned and asking nursing home staff questions when they notice that their loved one has become:

  • Depressed
  • Anxious
  • Particularly angry and/or anti-social
  • Emotionally numb.
