Continuing our three-part blog entitled Nursing Home Abuse Warning Signs: 5 Signs to Know, here are a few more indications that may alert families to the fact that their elderly loved one has been the victim of nursing home abuse or neglect.

2. Noticeable Anxiety or Fear around Certain People
In some cases, the emotional effects of nursing home abuse may only become apparent when the abuser enters the same space as the abused individual. For instance, when certain nursing home staff or family members are near an elderly loved one, it may be time to start asking serious questions if your loved one clams up around that person, seems especially nervous or anxious around a particular individual and/or seems to shake or otherwise exhibit fear around a particular person.
Taking notice of this warning sign of nursing home abuse can be especially important if your loved one has dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or some other condition that prevents him from being able to remember the abuse or communicate with you about the abuse.
3. Unexplained Bruising or Broken Bones
While certain medical conditions can make nursing home residents more susceptible to bruising and/or falling and breaking bones, the fact is that nursing home staff should be vigilant about caring for all of a facility’s residents and doing what is necessary to prevent such injuries.

- Nursing home staff’s failure to supervise residents (leading to them falling)
- Staff’s inappropriate use of restraints and/or excessive use of force with residents
- Other residents assaulting or abusing your loved one.
