Brain Injury News: March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month

Today marks the start of National Brain Injury Awareness Month, a campaign sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of American (BIAA) and supported by various national organizations that are dedicated to promoting awareness, investing in research and helping people with serious brain injuries. 

While National Brain Injury Awareness Month will involve a number of activities and sub-campaigns throughout the month of March, the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force (CBITF) has designed March 18, 2015 as Brain Injury Awareness Day, during which the public is welcome to participate in various events sponsored by this Task Force.

Supporting National Brain Injury Awareness Month, we thought it would be a good time to take a look at some brain injury statistics to shed some light on just how big of an issue traumatic brain injury is in the U.S. and what may be done to prevent it.

National Brain Injury Awareness Month: A Look at Brain Injury Stats

Here are some eye-opening statistics regarding traumatic brain injuries in the U.S.: 

• About 2.4 million people in the U.S. sustain a new traumatic brain injury each year.
• About 2 percent of the U.S. population is currently living with a TBI.
• While traumatic brain injuries result in the deaths of more than 50,000 each year in the U.S., they also cause more than 275,000 people to seek hospital care annually.
• The leading causes of traumatic brain injuries in the U.S. are motor vehicle accidents, falls and assaults.
• Sports injuries and combat are also prominent causes of traumatic brain injuries.
• Nearly 1 in every 3 injury-related fatalities in the U.S. is caused by traumatic brain injuries.
• While most TBIs that occur each year are classified as “mild,” when severe traumatic brain injuries occur, they can result in serious impairments to cognition, speech, movement, etc.
• The total costs of traumatic brain injuries in the U.S. are at least $60 billion each year.
