Although it’s recommended that, in general, drivers leave about 1 car length of distance between vehicles for every 10 mph (e.g., if drivers are going 50 mph, then there should be about 5 car lengths of distance between their car and other vehicles), they should double this recommendation in the winter.Leaving plenty of headway between vehicles will give drivers plenty of time to stop their cars and respond to changing driving conditions – such as other drivers unexpectedly slamming on their brakes.

If you don’t know the ways in which your car may operate differently in the cold, then you may want to take it for a test drive in a secluded area so you can get a feel for what you should expect when handling your vehicle in the winter.
