Knowing how your vehicle may handle differently in winter conditions is an essential winter driving safety tip that can reduce the chances of car accidents.

Wrapping up the three-part blog 6 General Tips for Driving Safety This Winter, here are the final two winter driving safety tips that all motorists should keep in mind as they commute this winter season.

  • Winter Driving Safety Tip 5: Don’t follow other vehicles too closely – Because winter usually means icy and snowy roads – and because icy and snowy roads can cause vehicles to lose traction and skid, it’s essential that drivers leave plenty of room between their car and the vehicles they are following when the drive during the winter. Although it’s recommended that, in general, drivers leave about 1 car length of distance between vehicles for every 10 mph (e.g., if drivers are going 50 mph, then there should be about 5 car lengths of distance between their car and other vehicles), they should double this recommendation in the winter.Leaving plenty of headway between vehicles will give drivers plenty of time to stop their cars and respond to changing driving conditions – such as other drivers unexpectedly slamming on their brakes.
  • Winter Driving Safety Tip 6: Know how to handle your car in icy conditions – Many vehicles will handle differently in cold, icy conditions, so drivers should be aware of if and how their vehicle may operate in a reduced (or potentially problematic) capacity during the winter. For example, does your car stall more when it’s cold? Is it more difficult to steer your car in colder weather? Or, does your engine sputter more frequently in the cold? If you don’t know the ways in which your car may operate differently in the cold, then you may want to take it for a test drive in a secluded area so you can get a feel for what you should expect when handling your vehicle in the winter.
