A 75-year-old cab driver who hit and killed a pedestrian crossing the street this past Monday has a history of speeding tickets and reckless driving, according preliminary police reports associated with the case. The fatal car accident occurred late Monday evening as the cab driver was speeding down Cicero Avenue when he hit a 56-year-old man who was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk; it is not clear at this time whether the victim was crossing at a signal or whether he was jaywalking. However, what is clear is that the impact of the cab caused fatal injuries that ultimately caused the pedestrian to be pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. According to a witness at the scene, the cab driver expressed no concern for the victim and instead kept repeating that he did not want to go to jail.
Making matters worse for the cab driver are the facts that:
- He has a record of number moving violations, including speeding and reckless driving, over the past 10 years.
- He does not appear to currently have an active livery drivers’ license.
- In 2006, he had his livery drivers’ license suspended or revoked (likely due to excessive moving violations.
Wrongful Death Lawsuits
Given the cab driver’s history of reckless driving, as well as the fact that he was witnessed to have been speeding at the time of the fatal car accident, the victim’s family does have a strong car accident lawsuit claim against the cab driver and would likely be awarded compensation for their tragic losses and mental anguish by pursuing this civil case. Although no amount of money can make up for the loss of a loved one, following through with a car accident and wrongful death lawsuit can help the victim’s family secure the money they need to cover funeral and burial costs, as well as their mental anguish in such difficult times.
