How reliable are those online and offline resources? Can you believe attorney reviews online? Any more than you can gain meaningful support for a lawyer’s ability from a billboard, TV commercial, and/or placard on the side of a bus? Big and bold ads are not enough to select the right attorney and law firm.

The public may be particularly susceptible to misleading or deceptive advertising by lawyers. How could one have confidence in a “Superb” rating when lawyers of greater experience and abilities come in a distant second or third for some of the mathematical models out there? Only vague, basic information is behind the real makeup of the rating models, shared by Avvo, limiting how informed it can be.

Regardless, online attorney rankings and review marketing companies are here to stay. Attorney review and ranking websites should be used as just one tool in conjunction with other means of finding the lawyer who is the best fit for you and your legal needs. Hiring the first attorney you see with a “Superb” or no ranking may not necessarily mean your representation is best suited for that attorney. We instead suggest you read any credible reviews by others of the lawyer’s performance. You might even ask for reference to call my contact personally. But by all means, do not get lazy on the selection of any professionals you retain, the least of which your personal attorney.
