A woman has been arrested for assault after she allegedly beat a man who had unknowingly hit her with his vehicle in a minor traffic accident. According to Chicago police, the woman – 28-year-old Sophia Body – had reportedly flagged down the 82-year-old victim in Grand Crossing. The victim responded to Body’s gestures, pulling his vehicle over in an effort to try to help her. Once his car was stopped, however, Body reportedly pulled the victim out of the car and began to allegedly beat him mercilessly. At one point, she used a screwdriver to injure the victim.
Police were eventually called to the scene by witnesses who saw the assault taking place. Upon their arrival, the responding officers noticed that the victim had suffered serious head and bodily injuries. They then questioned Body who admitted to beating the victim with the screwdriver because he had accidently bumped her with his car.
The Aftermath: Compensation for the Victim
While Body is currently in custody and will likely face criminal charges of assault, she may also be held liable for her egregious actions in civil court if the victim chooses to file a car accident and personal injury lawsuit against her. By filing such a case, the victim can obtain compensation for his:
- Injuries – both physical injuries and mental anguish
- Medical bills – including his emergency treatment costs and his ongoing medical care (if the assault has resulting in long-term injuries)
- Permanent disabilities – if any have been caused by the injuries he sustained in the assault
- Property damage – if the woman also damaged the victim’s vehicle during the assault.
