Over the weekend, five Bethalto-area teenagers who all attend Roxana High School were involved in a fatal car accident that left one of the dead and the rest of them seriously injured. According to Bethalto police, who are still investigating this tragic incident, the accident occurred just before 9:30 pm on Saturday November 9 on Buchta Road. The vehicle was reportedly being driven at a high speed when it went off the road and hit a tree in front of a residence. While some of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle upon the impact, law enforcement officials would not specify how many of the teens had been thrown from the vehicle.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they immediately pronounced that one of the teens was dead, and they ushered off the other four to a local hospital to receive emergency medical treatment for their serious injuries.
Possible Causes of the Accident
Although law enforcement officials have not publicly stated what they believe may have caused the accident, as the investigation is ongoing, the following may have played a role in this fatal car accident:
- Driver intoxication – Given when the accident occurred, it’s a possibility that the driver could have been drunk. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) more than 500 people in the U.S. are killed by drunk teen drivers each year.
- Reckless driving – Speeding, which may have been a factor in this accident, is reportedly a factor in about 35 percent of all fatal car accidents involving teen drivers.
- Failure to wear seatbelts – More than 50 percent of all teen occupants who are killed in car accidents reportedly were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. Given that some of the teens in this accident were ejected from the vehicle, it’s likely that they were not wearing restraints prior to the collision.
