On the afternoon of February 19, 2026, along the southbound lanes of Interstate 57 near the Edgewood intersection in Effingham County, a moment occurred that would quietly take two wonderful humans out of the world. What happened on that stretch of highway was recorded later in the language of reports and citations, but the true loss cannot be captured by those sterile words. Because when James and Catherine Rentfrow left this world, something irreplaceable left with them.
James Rentfro, 76 years old, was driving that day with his wife, Catherine, beside him. They were a Farina couple whose lives had long been intertwined with their family, their friends, and the community that knew them. The kind of couple whose presence seemed steady and constant—the sort of people whose lives quietly made the world around them better because they were actively making the world better around them.
As they traveled southbound on I-57, their SUV was suddenly struck from behind by a semi-truck. The impact was violent. The force of the collision pushed the Rentfrow vehicle forward into another car ahead of them, turning an ordinary drive into a devastating chain of events in a matter of seconds.
James suffered severe injuries in the crash. Despite the efforts of medical professionals and the prayers of those who cared about him, he passed away on March 3rd. Catherine also fought hard, but her injuries sustained proved too great. She died on March 7th and joined her husband with Christ.
In the days that followed, the world continued moving forward—cars continued down that same stretch of highway, people continued their daily routines—but the space James and Catherine once occupied was suddenly empty. Their home no longer held their shared laughter. Their family lost the comforting presence that had anchored so many gatherings. Their friends lost the familiar voices and warm companionship that had been part of their lives for years.
State Police later reported that the driver of the truck, 61-year-old Mark Lawson of Dallas, Texas, was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid the crash. He was not injured, but James and Catherine Rentfrow never came home.
And that is the quiet tragedy of it all. Because when people like James and Catherine are taken from the world, the loss spreads far beyond the moment of impact on a highway. It reaches into the lives of everyone who knew them and leaves a void that cannot truly be filled. Their absence will be felt in the family stories that will now be told without them, in the holidays where their chairs sit empty, and in the community that is simply not quite the same.
May the Lord shine upon James and Catherine Rentfrow now that they are all reunited.
We hope all those the family or friends of James and Catherine Rentfrow celebrate their life. Car crashes like one alter lives in an instant. They can cause injuries, hefty medical expenses, loss of vehicles, an extended recovery process and as here, death.
Unfortunately, while the family is grieving, planning funerals and figuring out how to move forward, the truck driver, his company and the insurance companies are doing everything in their power to avoid liability and responsibility. Routinely, we see the destruction of evidence and a cover up start to occur within minutes or hours a tragic event like this one. Unless one is taking action immediately to preserve evidence and information, it may be lost forever.
