Earlier this week, a truck accident resulting in serious damage to a building in Mascoutah occurred when the driver of the semi reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel. According to local law enforcement officials, who are still investigating the incident, the accident took place on Main Street just around 3 am on Tuesday November 12.
The truck driver, who told police that he was on his way back from a long haul and was just about 5 miles from his home, nodded off and lost control of the semi-truck, causing it to hit a barrier surrounding a telephone line. Upon this impact, the truck then ricocheted into a nearby building, causing significant damage. Given the time that the accident occurred, no one was in or around the building, so – thankfully – no one was injured or killed as a result of this accident.
Although local authorities are still investigating whether the driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident, the fact that he fell asleep behind the wheel indicates that he was clearing driving while fatigued (which has been proven by some studies to be as dangerous as drinking and driving). As a result, the truck driver was admittedly negligent in this accident, and, at the very least, local authorities plan on issuing the driver a citation for the damage he caused.
Despite the fact that no injuries or deaths were caused by this truck accident, the facts that the driver fell asleep and that he caused such significant damage to the building make him liable for compensating the building owner for the damages incurred. Additionally, the driver may also face a truck accident lawsuit filed on behalf of the city due to the damage sustained to the barrier surrounding the telephone pole.
