A two-vehicle crash at Pleasant and McCord Streets intersection in Centralia threw lives out of gear and hospitalized four individuals on Monday morning. The accident is a harsh reminder of the consequences of road negligence and the long-lasting effects such an event has on the involved parties.
The Centralia Police Department said the crash happened around 11:45 a.m. when 19-year-old Christopher Pugh of Orchard Drive in Centralia was traveling north on Pleasant Street. A witness said Pugh did not stop for the red light and crashed into an oncoming westbound pickup truck driven by 65-year-old James Endres of Germantown.
The impact of the crash was extreme, sending Endres’ tvehicle into the adjacent traffic signal, doing extensive damage to the signal pole and the occupants of Endres’ vehicle. Emergency units were on the scene quickly. James Endres and his wife, 63-year-old Jean Endres, were transported to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia by Lifestar Ambulance. Pugh and his passenger, 20-year-old Jackson Mooney of Walnut Hill, were transported to the same hospital by private car.
Following the accident, officials cited Pugh for violating a traffic control device, emphasizing the part that negligence had to play in the accident.
Two-car collisions are all too frequent in Illinois, especially at intersections where traffic signals and signs demand good attention and obedience. Red-light running, speeding, and distracted driving are common causes of collisions such as the one on Pleasant and McCord Streets. Such acts of neglect can have a life-changing impact on the motorists, passengers, and even pedestrians.
Based on statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost half of all traffic crashes happen at intersections, and a great deal of these happen because drivers do not yield or run red lights. Although most drivers feel that they can “beat the light,” this choice is a disastrous one.
