Elderly Victim Life Flighted from Scene and Suspect Arrested

A serious hit-and-run collision in Harrisburg, Illinois, critically injured a 61-year-old man early Tuesday morning. The accident happened at approximately 12:24 a.m. on June 3, 2025 near the intersection of Lewis Street and Ford Street, near Frank Leberman Drive.

In a report by the Harrisburg Police Department, officers arrived at the scene to discover the injured man with profound injuries. Emergency responders moved quickly, and the victim was airlifted to a regional hospital, where he was left in critical condition.

Illinois State Police reported that the driver who caused the accident left the scene right after the accident. Fortunately, law enforcement actions resulted in the driver’s capture minutes later. Though information regarding the driver and charges has not been made public yet, investigations continue.

Hit-and-run accidents such as this incident can leave a permanent imprint on victims’ and their families’ lives, which causes them physical, emotional, and economic suffering.

Facts and Law Concerning Hit-and-Run Crashes in Illinois

In Illinois, there is also a requirement that drivers not leave the scene of a wreck involving pedestrians. Illinois, similar to most other states, deems leaving the scene of an accident a very serious offense. Motorists who engage in hit-and-runs are punished with severe consequences, such as criminal felony charges, high fines, imprisonment, and license revocation.

Hit-and-run crashes are, regretfully, more than a rare occurrence in Illinois and nationwide. These kinds of accidents take place when a driver is involved in a crash and leaves the scene without offering aid or leaving his or her contact information. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable and critically injured in such circumstances, routinely suffering life-changing injuries because they lack the protective benefits of being in a car.

Statistics indicate that hit-and-run accidents are increasing across the country. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that more than 700,000 hit-and-run accidents are reported every year in the United States, causing about 2,000 deaths annually. Pedestrians and bicyclists are responsible for almost 65% of those deaths, which highlights the risk they are exposed to.

The victims of hit-and-run occurrences are often able to pursue civil claims against the fleeing motorist. If you or your family member gets critically injured in a hit-and-run collision in Illinois, you could be eligible for reimbursement of your medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. Victims can file lawsuits against the insurance of the at-fault driver once they are identified. Victims can also file for compensation through their own uninsured motorist policy in instances where the driver is not identified.

Furthermore, consulting with a lawyer is essential to addressing the intricacies of injury law and obtaining equitable compensation. There are information resources, such as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), that offer useful information regarding road safety, and victims can seek support services under the law for hit and run accidents offered in their area.
