A groundbreaking new program has been developed by U.S. regulators and a few major cellphone companies to try to reduce the risk of falling for cellphone tower workers.
Known as the Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program (TIRAP), this program has been developed and rolled out by the officials at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Employment and Training Administration (ETA, a division of the Department of Labor). Reportedly, some major cellphone carriers, including ATT, contributed to TIRAP.
While TIRAP is still in its infancy and will likely evolve as it becomes more established, at this point, TIRAP’s primary goal is to prevent the injuries and deaths of cellphone tower workers due to falling from towers.
To this end, TIRAP will be dedicated to providing tower technicians with critical skills training that specifically focuses on cellphone tower safety procedures. This training will be branched into various program levels, with some aimed at new, inexperienced technicians while others will be geared towards ongoing training for more experienced industry professionals.
As U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez has stated:
The cellphones in our pockets can’t come at the cost of a worker’s life… we know we can’t solve this problem alone though, and that’s why I am so glad to be joined in partnership on this issue with the FCC and major carriers like AT&T. It’s a perfect example of federal agencies and industry breaking down barriers and identifying common goals to save workers’ lives.
