An Illinois roofing company has recently been issued more OSHA citation for reportedly exposing workers to fall hazards. According to the announcement, the roofing company became the target of an OSHA investigation after regulators received a complaint that workers at a Naperville work site were not being granted the appropriate fall protections.

Upon investigating the complaint, OSHA officials found that the company had violated OSHA regulations by:

  • Failing to provide fall protections to roofers and, as a result of this failure, exposing workers to falling hazards (of about 18 feet)
  • Failing to provide ladders that would extend at least 3 feet above landings (for safe access purposes).

These violations resulted in OSHA officials issuing the Illinois roofing company two “willful” violations. Additionally, however, the company was issued three “serious” citations for:

  • Failing to provide sufficient protections for roofers around unguarded skylights
  • Using fall protection anchors that would not support 5,000 pounds
  • Not training roofers on fall hazards, protection and safety.

Penalties & Reactions

The total amount of the proposed penalties associated with these citations is $145,900, and the roofing company is reportedly contesting all of these citations.

Explaining OSHA’s perspective on this investigation, Jacob Scott, OSHA Area Director in Aurora has stated:

[This roofing company] continues to endanger the safety of its workers by refusing to ensure that fall protection is used on the job sites. A worker can be severely injured or killed in a fall in mere seconds. Failing to protect them from harm is unacceptable… Roofing contractors have a responsibility to train and protect their workers on job sites.
